Philip (Flip) Smith
Flip

1946 - 2008

Flip attended Notre Dame High School from 1961-64 as did many of the Forty-sixers. He played on the varsity football team and was known for his tenaciousness. Away from the field,  he was a good student and extremely mild mannered. After graduation in 1964, Flip attended Valley College for two years where he was an all-conference lineman.

Flip was always involved in his family's tire business in Santa Monica and in 1972 opened his own store (Flip's Tire Service) in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. He was a hard worker and his business still thrives today.

Flip was always on the move, both working and playing…he never just sat around.  Whether it was cleaning up Sepulveda Boulevard, working with the YMCA, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary, the Police Commission, or the multitude of other projects he signed up for, Flip knew of only one way to do it…and that was all out!

One of Flips proudest moments was when he received the Fernando award in 1997 for outstanding Community involvement and service to the San Fernando Valley.  That award says volumes about his dedication to helping people. As a result of his unselfish work, the Mid Valley Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA hold the annual Flip Smith Memorial golf tournament in his honor. Many of our Forty-sixers play in this wonderful event each year.

Flip is survived by his wife Vicky, son Shawn and daughter Kristy.  His children keep Flip’s tradition alive and now run Flip’s Tire Store in Van Nuys.

Contributer and friend,  Phil Mundy:  "We all love you Flip and will miss you…Mahalo".
